Spam Busting Tips

Monday, October 17th, 2011 by maria

Spam ( is one of those aggravating things (hmm a bit like mosquitoes ?) that we have all learned to live with and work around.   However, I do think that a little Spam goes a long long way…  here are a couple of useful resources to help us all reduce Spam and protect our selves – these tips could be very helpful for your office computer and your personal computer and could also  form the basis for a basic digital literacy lesson for students.

The first is from the Government of Canada site on the new Anti-Spam Legislation –   Spam – How to Recognise It and Protect Yourself – is a set of straightforward tips –  clearly written and very practical .

The second is  from Mashable - How to reduce the  Spam in  your Inbox, Mailbox and Voicemail…   it’s a short set of slides and you can also view it as one page.

Searching the Internet – a Refresher

Last week I took a look at some digital housekeeping – and it’s really paid off for me – I feel very tidy and organized – at least in my ‘digital’ life.  This time I thought I would revisit some of my internet searching skills – I think I’ve gotten just a teeny bit lazy – after all “google” has been used a a verb since 2006!!

So I set out to refresh my skills – here’s some of what I found… How to Search Like a Pro is a brief and breezy introduction to how to narrow your search to make it more effective.  Google itself offers very clear tips on basic and more advanced search… very helpful to make the most of your ‘googling’ time.  Four NETS for Better Searching is a terrific guide with super-clear examples of how to sharpen your search skills.

Google and Beyond: Searching the Web More Effectively is an easy to use guide to Google alternatives and Google features with some very good ideas and suggestions.  Finally a just updated list of Internet Tutorials is a great way to find easy to follow tutorials on searching, finding good content, keeping up to date with the web and much more.

Happy Searching!!

A little (digital) housekeeping

As  our “new year” in adult literacy  begins it is a good time to look at getting our tools in good order – computers, like everything else, need a bit of  tidying from time to time to keep them running well. I found a few sites that give good, easy to follow tips on how to maintain a computer in tip top condition.  Maintaining your computer is a short article covering the basics from cleaning up waste space to keeping your antivirus software updated.  How to Maintain your Computer is a  clear and simple step-by-step guide. How to Maintain your PC  is a short video by a computer technician with good tips on how to keep everything running at capacity.

Finally if you have ever had the experience of dealing with a computer virus you know how frustrating it can be . The Operation Cleanup guide will walk you through not only how to remove a virus but how to  deal with annoying mess a virus can leave behind.

Happy Housekeeping !!
