Remind101 – send text messages and emails to your students directly from your computer

remind101Texting is a quick way to communicate with your students and now you can use tools like Remind101 to send text or email messages to your class or student groups even if you don’t have a cell phone!

Remind101 is a service that provides a safe way for teachers to text message or email students. Using Remind101, teachers can engage their students more effectively without needing to know their students’ phone numbers and without having to give their own phone numbers out.

Homework assignments, class cancellations or test reminders can be distributed to your class or group with just a few clicks and even though students can’t respond to the text/email, you will have a way to quickly reach them when needed and help them practice their texting skills.

Students will simply need to be provided with a special number and code to subscribe to the class and to start receiving your messages. If they prefer to subscribe by email, they can send an email to a special address (usually a special code assigned to the class followed by @remind101.com).

Keep in mind that even though the service is free, your students might need to check their service plans for texting/data costs.

Here is how it works:

  1. Go to remind101.com and set up an account. You will be asked to enter your name and email and to select a password.

  2. Now, you will set up the class name (we chose TechLab) and you will be assigned a special number and code. Keep in mind that your students will need to follow this step as well to subscribe to receive the messages or they will need to send an email to subscribe for email notifications. If you don’t have a phone, you can simply skip this step.

  3. Next, you will be able to test this set-up on your phone and send a message to yourself. This way, you will also be able to see the messages you send out in the future and ensure that everything works. Once again, if you don’t have a phone, you can skip this step.

  4. Here is what the text messages will look like on the phone (keep in mind that we chose JP as the last name of the teacher when we were setting up the account):

A. First, a text message with the @techla code was sent to 705-230-2270

B. Then, we responded with the student name (we chose Student1)

5. Now you can explore your Remind101 dashboard on your computer. It gives you quick access to space where you can type and send messages, the phone number and code you need to provide to your students, and the number of students who subscribed to your class. You will also be able to see the messages you send and the messages you might have scheduled for later.

6. Remind101 can also be downloaded as an App and provides a widget that can be embedded in a website to display the messages you sent out.
