Turn Off the Lights browser extension

Turn Off the Lights is a free and simple to use browser extension that lets you dim everything on your screen except the video player you are watching. It helps to minimize distractions and bring your videos into focus. It can be a great tool for anyone, but especially for literacy students who might be distracted by all the additional text and images surrounding the video.

When installed, a lamp icon is displayed in the browser menu bar or in the omnibox, and you click on it to make the area surrounding the video fade. Clicking outside the video restores the rest of the screen.

You can adjust the transparency of the screen blocking and select a colour other than black if desired. You can even enable speech recognition settings to activate and control the extension with your voice commands. To change your settings, right-click on the lamp icon and select Options.

Turn Off the Lights can be used with all known video sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Hulu, Metacafe, YouKu, etc., and is compatible with Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Maxthon and Yandex web browsers.
